The Ancient $30.48 Searching for his long-lost father, Bransen Garibond is tricked into journeying across the Gulf of Corona to the wild lands of Vanguard, where he is pressed into service in a desperate war against the brutal Samhaist, Ancient Badden. On an Alpinadoran lake, just below Ancient Badden’s magical ice castle, several societies, caught in the web of their own conflicts, are oblivious to Ancient Badden’s devastating plans to destroy them.Branson becomes the link between the wars, and if he fails, all who live on the lake will perish, and all of northern Honce will fall under the shadow of the merciless and vengeful Samhaists. The Ancient is part of the Saga of the First King, a four-book series that chronicles the early days of Corona, the same world as Salvatore’s bestselling Demon Wars saga. |

Rare Treasure $3.48 Before the word "dinosaur" was even coined, a young girl discovered a remarkable skeleton on the rocky beach at Lyme Regis in England. Thus began a lifelong passion for an extraordinary woman who became one of the first commercial fossil collectors. Born in 1799, Mary Anning spent a lifetime teaching herself about fossils and combing the rugged ribbon of shore near her home. Her work yielded an astounding treasure trove: fossils of long-extinct creatures that thrilled customers in her shop and excited early paleontologists. Blind to the dangers of fossil-hunting and to the limitations imposed on women of her era, Mary Anning was a singular scientist who used her sharp eyes and clear mind to compose a picture of ancient life from the bones she unearthed. With his trademark graceful prose and lyrical watercolors, Don Brown distills the life story of this rare treasure of a scientist. |

Rare Earth $3.48 Gin Prettifield, who is part Indian, knows northern New Mexico's Sangre de Cristo Mountains. But she's never had to deal with an enraged bear or with the mangled body of a dying man.But when she leads a forest ranger to the scene, they come upon a mystery in this land of enchanted mesas and mountains. Can the dead walk? Is a murder, by an act of magic, daring Gin to unearth a crime?Only the Indians, who have witnessed many curious comings and goings on their ancient earth, understand the gathering confrontation between good and evil, terror and love -- a confrontation that can only end in the chill finality of death. |

The Ancient Coptic Churches Of Egypt (Kessinger Publishing's Rare Reprints) $38.98 1884. This contains both Volume I and II of this work. The word Copt is derived from the Greek word Aigyptos, which was, in turn, derived from Hikaptah, one of the names for Memphis, the first capital of Ancient Egypt. The modern use of the term Coptic describes Egyptian Christians, as well as the last stage of the ancient Egyptian language script. Also, it describes the distinctive art and architecture that developed as an early expression of the new faith. The Coptic Church is based on the teachings of Saint Mark who brought Christianity to Egypt during the reign of the Roman emperor Nero in the first century, a dozen of years after the Lord's ascension. Contents Volume I.: On the Structure of Coptic Churches in General; The Church of Dair Mari Mina at Old Cairo; Dair Abu's Sifain at Old Cairo; The Ancient Roman Fortress of Babylon and the Churches within It; The Minor Churches of Old Cairo; The Churches in Cairo; The Monasteries of the Natrun Valley in the Libyan Desert; and the Churches of Upper Egypt. Contents Volume II.: The Coptic Altar; Eucharistic Vessels and Altar Furniture; The Furniture and Ornaments of the Sacred Building; The Ecclesiastical Vestments of the Coptic Clergy; Books, Language, and Literature; The Seven Sacraments; Various Rites and Ceremonies of the Church; and Legends of the Saints. |

Ancient Israel and Ancient Greece $17.48 The Israelites and the Greeks formed "the first free societies, cultivating rain-watered fields around a fortified citadel, recording their words about the human situation in a widely-accessible alphabetic script." With a keen eye for both comparisons and contrasts, John Pairman Brown investigates relationships between ancient Israel and Greece. In this intriguing and engaging work, he addresses historical, religious, linguistic, and cultural connections between these Mediterranean cultures. With erudition and humility, the author illuminates both Israelite and Greek writings and cultures. He brings a vast knowledge of the ancient Mediterranean and its languages to these studies, which will startle and entice the reader back to the ancient texts. |

Ancient DNA $73.48 Ancient DNA refers to DNA which can be recovered and analyzed from clinical, museum, archaeological and paleontological specimens. Ancient DNA ranges in age from less than 100 years to tens of millions of years. The study of ancient DNA is a young field, but it has been revolutionized by the application of polymerase chain reaction technology, and interest is growing very rapidly. Fields as diverse as evolution, anthropology, medicine, agriculture, and even law enforcement have quickly found applications in the recovery of ancient DNA. This book contains contributions from many of the "first generation" researchers who pioneered the development and application of ancient DNA methods. Their chapters present the protocols and precautions which have resulted in the remarkable results obtained in recent years. The range of subjects reflects the wide diversity of applications that are emerging in research on ancient DNA, including the study of DNA to analyze kinship, recovery of DNA from organisms trapped in amber, ancient DNA from human remains preserved in a variety of locations and conditions, DNA recovered from herbarium and museum specimens, and DNA isolated from ancient plant seeds or compression fossils. Ancient DNA will serve as a valuable source of information, ideas, and protocols for anyone interested in this extraordinary field. |

Ancient Bodies, Ancient Lives $22.48 A compelling examination of gender, sexuality, and trhe family in ancient societies. What was it like to be a woman in prehistoric times? Did the sexual identities and gender roles found in modern society exist hundreds of thousands of years ago? Were age and other social distinctions as important then as now? And how can we ever hope to know, when little evidence survives except for fragments of bone, pottery, and jewelry?Rosemary Joyce draws on a wealth of recent studies that reveal the history of sexual identities to be a diverse and compelling one, offering profound challenges to modern stereotypes and assumptions. Maya Queens and Old European matriarchs, African-American midwives and Central Asian "Amazons": through these and other examples, Dr. Joyce demonstrates that the distinction between men and women was by no means the only way in which ancient people defined themselves, nor even the most important one. She also suggests that same-sex desire, far from being regarded as unnatural, could occupy an important and accepted place in some cultures. 35 illustrations. |

Ancient Lebanon $24.98 The borders of present-day Lebanon, which were established as recently as 1920, coincide in part with those of Ancient Phoenicia, which was both the cradle of ancient civilization and the source of the linear alphabet, the basis for all Western alphabets. The authors examine sixteen important monuments at eight archaeological sites in Lebanon, including Baalbek, site of the grandiose sanctuary of Jupiter Heliopolitanus and considered to be one of the seven wonders of the world; the Roman theater in the ancient city of Byblos; the massive Roman Hippodrome of Tyre; and the Crusader castle in Sidon, built by medieval Christians on their way to the Holy Land.
