Old $16.98 Starflyer 59 follows up the best record of their career, 2001's Leave Here a Stranger, with an album that sounds like a continuation of that fine disc. The same minor chords, breathy vocals, atmospheric production, and overall shoegaze sensibility prevail here. The arrangements are lovingly crafted, very dense, and packed with all kinds of guitars, Hammond organ, lush background vocals, percussion of all types, and nice surprises like tubular bells and occasional synth drums. Every nook and cranny is filled with sound that never overwhelms but rather creates a warm blanket of sound, wrapping the listener up in guitars and the intimate vocals of Jason Martin. The songs are all well-crafted and memorable; the new wave-inflected "New Wife, New Life," the sad "Major Awards," and the best song here, "Pasengers," are as good as anything Starflyer 59 has done. That's saying a lot. Lyrically, Martin seems obsessed with growing older on Old; on the piano- and treated-organ-based title track and the AOR ballad "First Heart Attack," which soars like a cut from a Boston record, he sounds like he is two steps from the grave. Don't let him fool you though-- the music on Old is young and alive. Eastside™ Solid $46 Eastside is based on an old western font, commonly used as display type on posters at the turn of the 19th century. In order to allow you to set subtle variations within the text, there are some alternate vowels which you can use when setting your type: -- e in the e-acute character position-- o in the o-acute character position-- E in the E-acute character position-- I in the I-acute character position-- O in the O-acute character position. You can mask the accents above the alternate vowel characters by creating a box which has the same colour as the background colour of your design. Because the regular and solid versions of the Eastside family are kerned and spaced exactly the same way, you can layer the solid fonts on top of the regular fonts, allowing you to create a shadow colour which is different from the foreground solid font colour. Simply set your text in the Regular or Oblique fonts and colour it with the values you want for the shadow slivers. Change the test to the Eastside Shadows font. Then copy that text and place the copy right on top of the source text, but change to the new text to the solid fonts. Finally, change the colour of the copied text to a shade which will compliment the shadow slivers. To adjust the gap between the main body of the font and the shadow slivers around them, simply follow the steps described in the section above and then shift the solid font text until it is in the desired position. You can create many interesting effects by using this technique. If you need a western font which serves as a good companion to our Eastside fonts, check out our Outlaw western family. In the PC version of this font family the style names are slightly different from those used in the Mac versions. But the fonts are otherwise identical.

This Old Road $39.99 This Old Road is the first recording of all new songs by Kris Kristofferson in the 11 years since Moment of Forever was released by Justice. (Interestingly enough, that album was originally recorded a few years earlier by producer Don Was for his Karambolage label, which lost its distribution deal.) Was is on-board here as a producer and as a musician, as are drummer Jim Keltner and old friend Stephen Bruton on guitar. Most of these 11 songs, however, are simply Kristofferson accompanying himself on guitar. The years -- Kristofferson turns 70 in 2006 -- haven't softened the old poet's social conscience -- "Pilgrim's Progress," "Wild American," "In the News," and "The Burden of Freedom" are every bit as radical as those found on his last two Mercury records, Repossessed and Third World Warrior in the mid-'80s. But Kristofferson is also wise enough to believe in love and forgiveness -- "Thank You for a Life," "The Last Thing to Go," "Holy Creation," "Final Attraction" -- and still remembers how to write a killer outlaw country song (check out "Chase the Feeling"). The tunes with the band are solid, but there is something utterly irresistible about the man with only his guitar. His voice is no better and no worse than it was in all those years form the 1970s on. But his phrasing as a singer has improved considerably. Kristofferson is dead-on here, razor-sharp, economical in his language, and to the bone in his insight. Old School $17.98 Old School is Koko Taylor's first new album in seven years, and after a series of health issues that sidelined her for a while, it could be viewed as a comeback of sorts, but if so, there aren't any signs of rust here. She still belts out her trademark Chicago blues like she always has, sidestepping any 21st century recording tricks for a straightforward set that wouldn't sound out of place next to her classic Chess sides from the early '60s. It's also encouraging that she wrote nearly half the tunes here, while turning in solid covers of a pair of Willie Dixon songs ("Don't Go No Further" and "Young Fashioned Ways"), one by Magic Sam ("All Your Love") and a scorching performance of Lizzie Lawler's classic "Black Rat" that rivals Big Mama Thornton's version. A rendition of "Bad Rooster" is also top notch. Of the originals, the lead track, "Piece of Man," is the most impressive, setting the tone and feel for an album that clearly celebrates Taylor's unshakable Chicago blues roots. Old School isn't sleek, pretty, posed or polished, but is instead raw, ragged and as real as a biting winter wind off of Lake Michigan. Call it a comeback if you want, but this is the territory that Koko Taylor has lived in for nearly fifty years. She owns this stuff. Call it a continuance. Old Enough $6.59 The debut album by Austin-based blues-rock singer Lou Ann Barton didn't sound like many major-label releases of 1982. Produced by Atlantic Records veteran Jerry Wexler (with, worryingly, some help from ex-Eagles schlockmeister Glenn Frey) and recorded at the legendary Muscle Shoals Sound Studios, Old Enough is a solid piece of soulful Texas-style blues-rock. Barton reveals herself to be an exceptional singer, sassy and sly but with a welcome tendency toward restraint. (Many singers in this style try too hard to prove their soulfulness and end up sounding ridiculous.) She's also got a keen eye for songs, investing the old standard "Finger Poppin' Time" with enough relish to make it sound fresh and turning Marshall Crenshaw's rockabilly-tinged "Brand New Lover" into a full-on Wanda Jackson-style barnburner. There are a few missteps, like the too-slick-by-half radio-friendly ballad "It's Raining," but overall, Old Enough is an unpretentious, timeless-sounding set. A band, custom insists, must have a name, though, and the Wolfe Bros. moniker does a fine job of conjuring up the old-timey music that the band specializes in. As with 2001: An Old-Time Odyssey, Old Roads - New Journeys takes a trip back in time to the golden era of string band music, the 1920s and 1930s. In fact, the most common author listed on the song credits is "Traditional -- Public Domain," meaning the songs were written before writers figured out they could make money by claiming authorship. There's a fun version of "Democratic Donkey," an old favorite that the New Lost City Ramblers had brought back to life during the late '50s but that actually dated back to the election of 1936. Dale Morris and Casey Hash deliver a fine duet on the Delmore Brothers' "Honey, I'm Ramblin' Away" that's spiced up by Hash's fine guitar work. There are many other solid versions of classic material -- "I'm Too Young to Marry" and "The Other Side of the Mountain" -- plus a couple of fun fiddle tunes -- "Grey Eagle" and "White River." The Wolfe Bros., however, aren't sticklers for tradition. They've rewritten "Diamond Joe"'s lyrics, and offer a couple original songs. It should be pointed out, though, that this material works well within the overall program. Eastside™ Solid Oblique $46 Eastside is based on an old western font, commonly used as display type on posters at the turn of the 19th century. In order to allow you to set subtle variations within the text, there are some alternate vowels which you can use when setting your type: -- e in the e-acute character position-- o in the o-acute character position-- E in the E-acute character position-- I in the I-acute character position-- O in the O-acute character position. You can mask the accents above the alternate vowel characters by creating a box which has the same colour as the background colour of your design. Because the regular and solid versions of the Eastside family are kerned and spaced exactly the same way, you can layer the solid fonts on top of the regular fonts, allowing you to create a shadow colour which is different from the foreground solid font colour. Simply set your text in the Regular or Oblique fonts and colour it with the values you want for the shadow slivers. Change the test to the Eastside Shadows font. Then copy that text and place the copy right on top of the source text, but change to the new text to the solid fonts. Finally, change the colour of the copied text to a shade which will compliment the shadow slivers. To adjust the gap between the main body of the font and the shadow slivers around them, simply follow the steps described in the section above and then shift the solid font text until it is in the desired position. Old No. 2 [Bonus DVD] $14.99 Now that the Supersuckers have become a productive cottage industry thanks to the good people at Mid-Fi Records (namely the band itself), Suckers frontman Eddie Spaghetti has given us his second solo album in as many years with 2005's Old No. 2. Like his previous solo disc Sauce, Old No. 2 is dominated by covers, though Spaghetti wrote a whopping four new songs for this set (double his output for Sauce), and since this album boasts a significantly lower goofiness quotient than his previous go-round, he offers us some solid and literate country-rock tunes, including the ode to touring "Here We Go" and a rueful look back at a busted romance, "Some People Say." Old No. 2 is in the tradition of the Supersuckers' periodic visits to the land of twang, with even the AC/DC and Coasters covers boasting a semi-acoustic sawdust-on-the-floor vibe, and his band (anchored by guitarist Jordan Shapiro) kicks up a satisfying amount of dust, even with the amps turned down. While Spaghetti unwittingly reveals how narrow his vocal range can be on a couple of tunes, he makes with the attitude when he needs to and sounds like he means it when he wants to, and his versions of Bob Dylan's "Tonight I'll Be Staying Here with You" and Willie Nelson's "Everywhere I Go" show the guy is a better interpretive singer than one might expect. Oh, and if you were looking for a straight-up joke, check out the Aerosmith revision on track 11. Old No. 2 is hardly revelatory, but it sounds like Spaghetti and his pals enjoyed their four days in the studio, and the good vibe is infectious -- lots of guys have tried a whole lot harder without coming up with a record half as enjoyable as this. Old New Ballads Blues $13.98 Since the early '90s Belfast guitar whiz Gary Moore has returned again and again to the blues, leaving his metal phase far behind. Old New Ballads Blues is exactly what the title says it is, a mix of old blues (covers of songs by Elmore James, Willie Dixon, and Otis Rush), new blues (five Moore originals), ballads (half the album) and, well, blues (by one definition or another, everything here passes for blues). The real surprise is that the strongest songs are the original Moore-penned ballads, as Moore gives powerful and atmospheric performances (both vocally and as a guitarist) on "Gonna Rain Today," "No Reason to Cry," and a solid horn-augmented remake of one of his best songs, "Midnight Blues," from what is easily his best album, 1990s million-selling Still Got the Blues. The James and Dixon covers ("Done Something Wrong" and "You Know My Love" respectively) seem disappointingly by-the-numbers, while the Rush song, "All Your Love," fares a bit better, but Moore's own compositions shine brightest here, giving him plenty of room to weep on the old Les Paul, which is a very good thing, since vocals have never been Moore's strongest suit and his lyrics are often on the slight side.
